31 March 1923 diary of Dr John Stewart Muir (1845-1938) of Selkirk

Not quite as Misty but duller all day + a little rain about 4. Walked round town, Dunsdale, Ashybank, Hospital +c. Went to opening of Bazaar1 by Lady Dalkeith.2 Pat Smith3 introduced her + I proposed thanks. I didn’t stay. A lot of people were there. Cath Smith4 came over yesterday for high tea with Helen5 + me. Baptie6 scraping moss of [sic] tennis green. Got books prepared for April.

1 There was a Golf Club bazaar on two days of the Spring holiday weekend.

2 Lady Vreda Esther Mary ‘Molly’ Montagu Douglas Scott née Lascelles (1900-1993), at this time Lady Dalkeith, later the Duchess of Buccleuch.

3 Patrick ‘Pat’ Smith (1858-1930), advocate and sheriff-substitute, sometime of The Firs, Selkirk.

4 Catherine Adam ‘Cath’ Smith (1874-1929), daughter of Thomas Smith, tweed manufacturer, and Katie Smith née Locke (about 1854-1934).

5 Helen Frances ‘Mousey’ Muir (1880-1963), Dr Muir’s third daughter and sometime housekeeper.

6 Thomas Baptie (1860-1929), driver and handyman for Dr Muir.
