15 August 1922 diary of Dr John Stewart Muir (1845-1938) of Selkirk

Ernest and Kitty1 left this forenoon to go back to East Fenton via Berwick. I have enjoyed their visit greatly. I motored to Newhall2 (where I haven’t been for many years (Ale Water) + then through Lilliesleaf + up to Borthwickshiels3 + then via Tushielaw to Ramseycleuch where got tea at the P.O.4 I met Gatty’s brother5 to whom I had sent a cert. of death addressed to the Ettrick Registrars when it should have been Yarrow.

1 Hugh Ernest Muriel (1886-1979), banker, and Katherine Stewart Rennie ‘Kitty’ – sometimes ‘Kate’ – Muriel née Taylor (1883-1960), daughter of Edward Earl Taylor (1855-1929) and Jane Logan Rennie (1855-1915), Dr Muir’s niece.

3 Dr Muir had been attending Robert Fletcher Mitchell (1887-1947), Tenant Occupier of part of Borthwickshiels, Roberton [1922 Valuation Roll, VR011600033-/707, Roxburgh County, page 707 of 993].

4 Jane Brunton was the postmistress at Ramsaycleuch, Ettrick [1922 Valuation Roll, VR011700009-/364, Selkirk County, page 364 of 611].

5 Assume Percival Edmund, sometimes including on this death registration Edmund Percival, Gatty (1866-1937), of Offley, Hitchen, Hertfordshire, brother of Victor Herbert Gatty (1864-1922) who was found dead at Bowerhope, Yarrow on 13 August 1922.
